Summer Nationals Wrap-Up

Victoria- Julien Dodu and Julian Monks set the tone on Days 1 and 2 of Summer Nationals, setting two new club records.

Dodu lowered his own club record in the 1500m Freestyle, swimming to a 30th place finish on his first day at his first Senior National Championships. Oodu also lowered his best time by over a second in the 200FR, and is closing in on both the Senior National standard and the Club Record currently held by teammate Zach Fedak.

Monks, who set the Club Record back in 2007 in the Men's 100m Breastroke, shattered the old mark by a full second, swimming to a final time of 1:04.63. Monks placed 2nd in the C Final, in an event that featured 5 International swimmers. Monks's time was the 11th fastest by a Canadian swimmer in the event.

16 year old Devin Ste.Marie finished in 2nd position in the C Final of the Women's 200 Butterfly on Day 1, just over her club record set in a LZR bodysuit last season. Ste. Marie was the 3rd fastest 18&Under swimmer in the event, and the top Ontario female in the event as well.

Swimming in the B Final on Day 2 was Christine Raininger, who finished up in 16th position and was also just over her club record set in a body suit last season.

Qualfiying for her first Senior National qualifiying standard in Long Course meters on Day 1 was 15 year old Carleigh Barrett in the 200m Butterfly. Barrett narrowly missed a spot in Finals and dropped 4 seconds in the event. Her time of 2:21.29 is the third fastest this season in Canada for her age category.

Also qualifying for LC Senior Nationals on Day 2 was Darelle Cowely, who dropped 7 seconds in the 400IM, on her way to a 5:06.25. Cowley, also at her first Senior Nationals, cracked the Top 30, and was one of the top 15 year olds in the event.

Veteran Michelle Fleming got her meet off to a good start with best times in the 50FLY and the 100m Breastroke, narrowly missing Finals in the latter with a new lifetime best.

On Day 3, Julian Monks equalled his Club Record in the 50m Breastroke, qualifying for the B Final. Julien Dodu had the race of the day, smashing his best time by 4 seconds on his way to a 4:07.88. Dodu was one of the top 17 year olds at the meet in the event, and also broke the club record by 4 seconds. Dodu's time represents his first time swimming under the Senior National standard in the event, and he has dropped 21 seconds in the event since April. The Men's and Women's freestyle relays competed in the Finals session, highlighted by Darelle Cowley's split time of 58.70 for her leg of the race, and Alex Andrechuk and Michelle Fleming swimming well below their lifetime bests in order to help the team.

Day 4 was the scene for two additional Club Records. Devin Ste. Marie got things started with a fantastic swim in the 200IM, dropping 3.5 seconds in the 200IM, just a half second over the Senior National standard. Julian Monks took a second out of his best time in the 200m Breastroke, breaking the Club Record by over a second and qualifying for the C Final, where he eventually finished in 5th spot. Michelle Fleming equalled her best time in the morning, also qualifying for the C Final. At night, Michelle performed a lifetime best and finished in 4th spot. Christine Raininger dropped a whopping 4.5 seconds in her 200m Breastroke, narrowly missing the Senior National standard in the swim. Chris Tanouye dropped 7 seconds in his 800m Freestyle to close out his meet with a best time. The race of the day once again belonged to Julien Dodu, who lowered his best time in the 800m Freestyle by 3 seconds, qualifying for Senior Nationals for the first time in the event, and setting a new Club Record in the proceess. Dodu has dropped over 20 seconds in this race since April. Dodu also led off the Men's 4x100 Medley relay in the FInals session with a new best time in the 100m Backstroke.

AAC finished the meet with 6 appearances in Finals (1 more than last summer's meet), and 6 new club records, and 4 new Senior National qualifying standards achieved.

This meet caps off the squad's best season in recent memory, and all athletes should be congratulated.
