Tough, Talented and 12 & Under: Young Stars Light Up the Pool at Provincials

With 18 swimmers attending Canada Cup 3 in Montreal, AAC split their top squads, sending a team of 12 & Under athletes with Coach Mischa Sommerville to Nepean to race the best in the Province.

Leading the way was 10 year old Aryanna Fernandes, who scored points and dropped time in every one of her events. Fernandes won Silver medals in the 100FLY, 200FR, 50FLY and 200IM. Her best race of the meet was a spectacular 400m Freestyle, a race in which she dropped over 20 seconds, won the Gold Medal and smashed the existing Club Record by over 10 seconds.

12 year old Cassidly Blackwin found the podium in the 800m Freestyle, dropping 14 seconds from her best time and finishing with a Silver Medal. Blackwin shattered the existing club record in the event by 10 seconds. Cassidy dropped time and scored points in 100% of her events, swimming to Top 5 finishes in the 50FR, 100FR and 200FR.

Just-turned-11-year old Emily Vandenberg made large drops in all of her events, highlighted by a remarkable 9 second drop and a Top 15 finish in the 200m Backstroke.

On the boys side of the pool, 12 year old Ryan Kelly continued an excellent season with medal winning performances in 3 of 6 races, and point scoring swims in the remaining 3. Kelly won Gold in the 50m Freestyle, Bronze in the 100m Butterfly and Gold in the 200m Butterfly- an event in which he broke his own Club Record.

Also competing in the 12 year old category was Steven Taylor, who achieved point scoring swims and best times in the 200FLY, 100FLY and 200IM. Joining him was Alexander Gilchrist, who swam to 100% best times and narrowly missed scoring points in the 200m Butterfly.

Two "Rookies" represented AAC in the 11 year old category, but raced like seasoned veterans all weekend. Mark Burns competed in a very full event schedule, which included two relays with the 12 year old squad. Burns swam to 100% best times, highlighted by an 8 second drop and an 11th place finish in the 400FR. Also competing in his first Provincials was Ethan Harrison, who swam to best times in all of his events, capped off with a 27 second drop in the 400 Freestyle.

Congratulations Athletes!
