The Ajax Aquatic Club sent 24 athletes to Youth Cup 2009, and
the small but very competitive squad came home with some impressive
results. Leading the way was 14 year old Robert Gilchrist, who was
fresh off the Swimming Canada 2009 Prospects training camp held in
late November in Etobicoke. The week-long camp featured a small
group of Canada's top young swimmers, which culminated in some
racing at the 2009 Canada Cup.
Gilchrist showed why he is considered a prospect, breaking 4
club records- two of which were nearly 20 years old. Gilchrist now
hold all but two of the short course AAC freestyle club records.
New records were set in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 Freestyle races.
Also putting in a noteworthy performance was Zach Fedak, who
attended the meet in preparation for his December trip to Portland,
Oregon, on the 2009 Swim Ontario Paul Bergen International Tour
Team. Fedak lowered his best time in the 200FR to an impressive
1:53.07, also making the short course Senior National standard for
the first time. He is now within .4 of the 15&Over club record
in the event. His 200FR time, along with his 400FR time of 4:05.20
and his 800FR time of 8:37.70 place him in the Top 5 in Canada
right now for 17 year old males.
